Thomas Newham was the son of Daniel Newham of Maryland and Annie Smith of South Carolina.

Thomas Newham was married to Nancy Smith and then to Nancy Larimore. He had at least four children: William, Elizabeth Ann, Robert and Olonzo. In 1880, his son, Robert and Robert's wife, Sarah, was living with him.

James is buried by his grandsons, Clarance and Forest, and his daughter-in-law, Sarah. He shares a tombstone with his wife Nancy (Larimore) Newham. However, it has fallen on the side that has Thomas' inscription.

His wife, Nancy (Smith) Newham is buried in a different cemetery.
