Benjamin Otis Baker. 89, of Arkansas City, died Saturday (October 17, 2020) at his residence. Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Private family burial services will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Pastor David Stanley will officiate.
The casket will be open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Tuesday funeral home.
Friends are requested to follow all COVID 19 mandates include wearing a mask and social distancing.
Ben was born February 2, 1931, in Arkansas City, to Grover and Stella (Mayhill) Baker. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating Arkansas City High School in 1950. He later graduated from Arkansas City Junior College (Cowley College). He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He married JoAnn (Grissom) Finley October 4, 1975. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. He worked for Mauer-Neuer/Rodeo Meats/John Morrell Meat Packing for a total of 26 years. He, then, served as custodian for the Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church for 11 years. And, finally, as custodian for First Baptist Church retiring in 2013.
He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church and the Wifni Sunday School Class. Ben also coached Little League Baseball in Arkansas City for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife JoAnn of the home; step-son Mark Finley of Salina; and a brother Franklin Baker of Henderson, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers Waylon, Larned, Allen, and Carl.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
