John W. Prikryl of Taylor died on Saturday, August 31, 2002. He was born on November 24, 1921 in Granger, Texas, to Rufus and Amalia (Jasek) Prikryl.

On October 16, 1949, he was married to Marilyn Sturm. He was a member of the 1940 Class of Granger High School and recently attended his 66th high school reunion in April, 2002. He was a veteran of W.W.II, serving at Normandy on D-Day and in the Battle of the Bulge as a member of the 746th Tank Battalion. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and a Presidential Citation.

John was well-known as the operator of the Curve Inn Tavern in Taylor from 1951 thru 1981, where he was known as the maker of the "best hamburgers in town" and where he made may lifelong friends. He was also retired from the US Postal Service and was also a retired farmer/rancher. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the KJT, American Legion and VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Andrew , Zigmund, and Ignatius Prikryl; two sisters, Hatti Dahl and Olga Matl.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marilyn Prikryl of Taylor; one daughter, Joyce Downs and husband, Jim of Taylor; two sons, Dan Prikryl and wife, Tina of Austin and James Prikryl and wife, Donna Stetz of San Antonio; three grandchildren he dearly loved, Jonathan (J.D.) Downs of Santa Monica, California, Joye Downs Wilkes and husband, Travis of Austin, and Emilian Stetz of San Antonio; one sister, Rose Lee Prikryl of Taylor; one brother, Rufus Prikryl and wife, Mary of Granger; three sisters-in-law, Gertye Mae Prikryl and Agnes Prikryl both of Taylor, and Rosalyn Krause and husband, Charles of Elgin.

Rosary service will be held Monday, September 2, 2002, at & p.m. at Providence Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Taylor with Msgr. Lonnie Urban officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rufus Prikryl, Jr., Latius Prikryl, Cary Prikryl, Michael Doerr, Mark Doerr, and Stanley Krause. Honorary pallbearers will be his Curve-Inn- friends, Moe Buzan, Curtis Martin, Raymond Veselka, Herbert Thaler, John Marcon, Donald Kunze, Jeddo Janecka, and T.W. Holstrom; post-office friends - Tony Kasper, Pete
Bloomquist, and Gloria Morales, and friens Vencil Mares and Roman Stasny.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Joe Downs Music Scholarship Fund, c/o First State Bank, Taylor, TX. 76574 or to Lone Star Hospice, 1212 Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock, TX. 78664.

The family would like to express their thanks to the loving and caring staff at Taylor Care Center, Lone Star Hospice, and Dr. Lindsey and the wonderful nurses at Scott and White Hospital in Temple for their extraordinary care of John during his recent illness.
