Legendary California Senator. Creator of California Senior Legislature. Political career began as Santa Cruz County Commissioner in 1966. Elected in 1976 to state's 28th Assembly, serving 2 terms and Chairman for newly created Committee on Aging. In 1980, began representation of District 17 (later named Dist. 15), authoring over 456 bills, and 120 of those regarding issues for the elderly and their health care: Alzheimer's, respite-care and elder abuse, among other critical concerns regarind seniors. Influential Senate Rules Committee member, Majority Whip, and Majority Leader. Born to Portuguese immigrant heritage in Watsonville, California. Graduated Watsonville High School and Hartnell College in Salinas, California. Wife's name: Helen. Helped start Mello Packing Company, the family apple and cold storage business, among other business ventures. Played jazz saxophone. Performed at public functions with band which included the late Senator Ralph Dill, and Dill's assistant, Polly Gardner. Also performed with Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra at a benefit concert.
