Judge Charles Cooke Lester, widely known lawyer of Saratoga County, died recently at his home in Saratoga Springs after a long illness. Judge Lester was born at Milford, Otsego county, June 27, 1850. At the age of sixteen he entered Eaton college and was graduated in 1870 with the degree of A. B., receiving that of A. M. three years later. He studied law in the office of his father, Charles S. Lester, and on his admission to the bar, in June, 1873, a partnership was formed under the name of C. S. & C. C. Lester, which continued until the death of his father in 1904. He was a member of the constitutional convention of 1894, was elected surrogate of Saratoga county in 1904 and served until Jan. 1, 1906. In November, 1905, he was appointed miscellaneous court reporter by Governor Higgins. In 1904 Mr. Lester framed a law simplifying the proceedings for the sale of real estate of decedents for the payment of debts and funeral expenses, and in 1906 was the author of a bill providing for the recording of agreements for settlement of estates.
