NEW BEDFORD — Fred J. “Scotty” Scott, 80, of North Dartmouth left this world peacefully Tuesday, November 13, 2018 after a brief illness.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 45 years, Maureen (Hanrahan) Scott; dear aunt and uncle, Janet and Jim Miller of New Bedford; brother-in-law, James Hanrahan and his wife Karen Hambleton of Dartmouth; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and many Godchildren, who brought much joy to his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Dorella (Sowle) Scott and sister Vivian Pratt.

He served in the US Army during the Berlin Crisis in Germany as a radio operator. Scott was educated in the New Bedford School system and graduated from Bristol Community College and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth through the GI Bill. He was a buyer for Laurens Standard Grocery in New Bedford and for the US Naval Exchange in Quanset, RI. He later was the owner of Scotty’s Landscaping. Upon retirement from his business, he taught in the Acushnet School system where he continued his friendships by attending the monthly breakfasts with his fellow teachers.

Scott was active in many special interests including; the Big Brother Organization, the Acushnet Lions Club, a former member of the Holy Name Couples Club and until a few weeks ago, the Jolly Whalers Bowling Club. Scott was known to always lend a hand when needed. His honesty, sincerity and friendship will be remembered by all. Gardening remained a lifelong passion along with his love for animals and his two good friends, Puma and Jax.

Calling hours are Thursday from 4-7pm in the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11:00am in St. Mary’s Church, South Dartmouth. Interment with Honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Bedford.
