President of Nicaragua. The son of a prominent Nicaraguan general living in exile in Costa Rica, Díaz developed close ties to the United States while working as the secretary for the American-owned La Luz y Los Angeles Mining Company. In 1909 he participated in the overthrow of Nicaraguan President José Santos Zelaya by providing funds for the rebellion, and in 1910 he was elected Vice President of Nicaragua. In 1911 he became President of Nicaragua, an office he held until 1917. Quickly coming under the threat of rebellion in 1912 from Luis Mena, Díaz requested United States intervention and began a long period of American occupation of Nicaragua. In 1926 he was reappointed President of Nicaragua following the failed attempt by Emiliano Chamorro to establish a government after he forcibly took power, and served as such until 1929. His second presidency also came under threat of rebellion and was only resolved after US Secretary of State Henry Stimson arranged an armistice plan that promised to bring elections and American withdrawal. Díaz left Nicaragua in exile in 1936.
