The daughter of Clarence Everett Dille and Bessie M. Plummer, Mary Jane's parents divorced when she was young. She graduated from Jerseyville High School in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.

She married James Donald "Don" Clayton on 25 Mar 1955 in Greenville, Mississippi. He was the son of Arthur Clayton and Iva Mae Icenogle.

Don was a United States Marine Corps veteran who served in the Korean War. On 24 May 1951, his unit was traversing the side of a mountain in Korea when he was wounded in action. Before entering the service, he had worked for the Yoder Construction Company for a short time after graduating from high school.

Mary Jane and Don were the parents of 5 children. She worked as a nurse's aide for over 25 years at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton, Illinois. Don also worked for St. Anthony's in its maintenance department.

The family lived in Bethalto, Madison County, Illinois for many years.

Mary Jane was known for her friendly disposition and the care she always showed towards others. She was an excellent cook whose fried chicken and pies were enjoyed by many friends and family members over the years.

More than anything, she loved to spend time caring for her family and grandchildren. She was so proud of all of them and left them with many wonderful memories to forever cherish.

Don, her husband of 58 years, passed away in 2013.

Mary Jane lived until 2020. At the time of her death, she was 85 years, 8 months and 14 days old.

She was survived by 4 sons and 4 daughters-in-law; 1 daughter and 1 son-in-law; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mary Jane was preceded in death by her mother and step-father; and her father and step-mother.

Visitation took place from 10:30 a.m. until beginning of noon funeral services at Grafton Methodist Church in Grafton, Illinois. Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto was in charge of arrangements.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Southern Illinois Hospice Association.
