A lifelong resident of the area, Steve was a graduate of Sherman High School, Class of 1966. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served as a medic at Bethesda Naval Hospital from 1967-1969.
He worked as a machinist all his life, and for the last 13 years, was employed by Excelco/Newbrook in Silver Creek, where he was their tool crib manager.
Steve was kind-hearted, loved people, and was known for his great big smile. An avid book reader, he also loved landscaping, woodworking, and working with his hands.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 62 in Dunkirk and enjoyed attending Kingdom Hall in Dunkirk with his wife on Sundays.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl "Cheri" Dickinson-Oviatt; pet dogs, Rudy and Boss; seven stepchildren, Jim Dracup, Andrew Dracup and Michael Dracup, all of the Jamestown area, Andria Meeder of Fredonia, David Meeder of Charlotte, NC, Nathan Dickinson of Omsk, Russia and Amanda Dickinson of Knoxville, TN; and 11 stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Dracup, Hailey and Christopher Takacs, Shannon, Daniel, Erin, and Summer Dracup, Samantha Bey, Kayla, Andrew and Christopher Meeder. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lynda (Wright) Oviatt.
