Mr. Nathaniel Vardell Hughes, Sr., age 86, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2020. Mr. Hughes was born on August 13, 1934 in Ash, NC, to the late Charlie Pinkney Hughes and the late Caroline Smith Hughes. Mr. Hughes worked as a tobacco farmer and was a member of Soldier Bay Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Hughes of Ash, NC; two sons, Nathaniel Vardell Hughes, Jr., and wife, Cynthia of Nakina, NC and Kevin Neil Hughes and wife, Sharlene of Penhook, VA; daughter, Vicki Hughes Cox and husband, Nolton of Tabor City, NC; four grandchildren, Kyle hughes and wife, Lindsey, Jeremy Cox, Meredith Luke and husband, Jimmy, and Ashton Hughes; and two great-grandchildren, Caroline Hughes and Harleigh Cox.

Mr. Hughes was predeceased by his first wife, Johnnie Mae Caison Hughes and nine brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Hughes Family Cemetery with Reverend Jason Benton officiating.
