Religious Leader. This former traveling evangelist became one of America's most famous preachers in a career that spanned more than forty years. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of Pentecostal evangelists. He had little formal seminary training, but his early participation in organizing the family revivals and acting as the family's master of ceremonies gave him practical experience that served him well when he launched his own ministry. Humbard eventually settled in Akron, Ohio where he established "The Cathedral for Tomorrow". In 1953 he began televising his services and by 1970 his TV show was reportedly aired on more stations than any other program in America. By 1979 the show was aired internationally. However, financial struggles caused the ministry to suffer major setbacks. He eventually moved to Florida and by the 1990's he gave up his on-air preaching. At the time of his death he was recognized as a respected visionary in religious television programming and as a pioneer in church growth.
