Rosemary F. Fitzgerald, age 102, died Sunday, October 11, 2020 at her daughter Kathleen’s home in Baltimore.

Born March 27, 1918, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Peter P. and Rose (Lynch) McElligott. Her father was an attorney and elected member of the NY State Legislature from 1909 -1919. She grew up in Brightwaters Bay Shore, NY with her beloved siblings who preceded her in death: Joseph McElligott; Angela McElligott Pisani; and identical twin, Agnes McElligott Carpenter. Upon graduating from Bay Shore High School, Rosemary worked for Western Union and then Grumman Aircraft during WW2. After this she began a long career in the offices of the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, beginning with the Long Island State Park Commission and ending with retirement in Albany in 1977.

Rosemary was married for 55 years to the late George J. Fitzgerald, a WW2 veteran, who died in 2007. They were good neighbors on Mariette Place in Albany and upon retirement spent winters in Nokomis, Florida. She continued to be a yearly snowbird though 2020, soaking up the sun and sunsets on Nokomis Beach as often as possible.

Rosemary was a long-time communicant at St. James Catholic Church. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout troop leader, helping neighbors, visiting family in Long Island, New Jersey and California, researching family genealogy and seeing historic sites throughout the east coast. She was known among friends and family for her birthday cards, Christmas cookies, prime rib dinners and her enjoyment of daily doses of chocolate.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Kathleen, 12 nieces and nephews and many great, and great-great nieces and nephews throughout the country. Nana Rosemary also leaves behind an extended family of young people from the Holmes and Nnamani families in Baltimore who brought much joy to her later years.

Interment will be private in the Fitzgerald family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hoosick Falls, NY.
