Clifford L. Bonnell, 85, who formerly resided at 904 E. Ninth and more recently at Delaware Hotel, died Friday afternoon at Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis, where he had been a patient for several weeks.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Bonnell came to Muncie in 1937. For 24 years he was employed as a reserved policeman in Westwood prior to his retirement about 1962. Before coming to Muncie he was employed as a guard in the United States Mint in Denver, Colo.
He was stationed in the Phillippine Islands while serving with B. Company in the U.S. Infantry during the Spanish-American War.
He was a member of Muncie Lodge 433, F and AM, Scottish Rite, and Murat Shrine.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Mae St. Clair and Mrs. Nellie Hanning, both of Shady Side, Ohio, and Mrs. Lourena Bamberg, Miami, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Myrtle Lynch, East Chicago; and two step-sons, Eugene Merket, Muncie, and William Merket, Bensonville, Ill.
Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Meeks Mortuary with Rev. Earl Vaughn, pastor of Walnut Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Strong Cemetery in Albany. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary where Masonic memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
