Deacon Melvin Franklin Carter was born on January 27, 1935 in Chase City, Virginia, the son of the late Josephine Hayes Carter and Lenton Carter. At an early age, Melvin accepted Jesus Christ and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Chase City, Virginia.

Melvin was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and the Marines. During his military service, his oldest daughter Marilyn Lott was born. After completing military service, he began his career as a Barber in Jersey City, New Jersey. On September 14, 1965, Melvin was joined in Holy Matrimony to Vernell Bailey. From this union, two children were born: Robin and Kenneth "Stevie."

In 1994, Melvin retired from East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, New Jersey after over 30 years of dedicated service as a Corrections Officer.

Melvin was a man of integrity and strength. He loved to share his experiences with his family. Melvin was big on family and loved his grandchildren: Ericka, Taja, Nakaia, Torri, Nyle, Daija and Jailyn so much! His great-grandchildren kept "Pop Pop" going: Janiyah, Stephanie, Xavier, Taylor, and Elijah. Melvin had a laugh that would change the atmosphere. He was a sports fan and loved to watch football and basketball games. His favorite team was the NY Giants and loved watching "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy."

He rededicated his life to the Lord at First Baptist Church in Linden, New Jersey. Prior to his illness, Melvin was a dedicated Deacon under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Derrick R. Dumas. Previously, he was a Deacon at White Rock Baptist for many years. Melvin was born into a very large family of eighteen. He knew no stranger and he allowed his works to speak for him. Deacon Carter loved being able to serve and worship God in the building and at home when he became ill. His spiritual influence will forever shape the lives of those he touched.

On Monday, October 12, 2020, Deacon Melvin Franklin Carter departed this life at home in Linden.
