In 1862 he enlisted in the 81st Reg., Ind. Vol. Inf, the Flag Company for the Union Army and fought at Stone River. Later he was a member of the 68th Co, 2nd Bat., Veteran Reserve Corps.
He married Amanda Louisa Piercy on Sep 27, 1868 in Putnam County, Indiana and they had 4 children: Ulysses, Lessie, Charles, and Cordora. Amanda died Aug 1877.
Harvey had a general store on Main Street in Cloverdale, IN, and lived in the back of his store. Mar 28, 1892 he married Elizabeth Brothers in Putnam County. He later established a mercantile business, The One Price Store. Harvey was a postmaster for 14 years, and a Trustee of the Church of Christ.
Harvey died at Cloverdale on June 4, 1930. He was Cloverdale's oldest citizen when he died.
