Musician. He was a singer and guitar player regarded as one of the pioneers of Delta Blues. In the mid 1900s, together with his half brother Ben on a mandolin, he began to play as a novelty act at picnics, camp meetings and for prisoners at Mississippi State Penitentiary. During the 1920s to 1930s, he toured with Hacksaw Harney, Bo Carter and was a member of The Mississippi Sheiks, one of most commercially successful blues ensembles of the era. By the end of the 1940's, he played rarely as new styles and trends left him unappreciated. At the time of his death, he was the oldest surviving Mississippi bluesman that recorded in the days of the original blues. His grave marker was paid for by musician John Fogarty.
