Son of Pierce F. and Mary O'Brien Cummings, he was born in North Adams and attended local schools. He was a traveling salesman in 1917 before he entered the Army.

"The funeral of Sergeant Thomas F. Cummings, who died at Washington, D. C, Saturday from penumonla, was held from St. Francis' church this morning at 9 o'clock and was largely attended. A solemn high mass of requiem was said with Rev. Dr. E. P. Dumphy as celebrant. Rev. Walter Hogan, deacon, and Rev. John J. Broderick of Adams, sub deacon. There were a number of beautiful floral tributes. During the mass Michael O. Haggerty sang "Face to Face." Miss Theresa Curley sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and Mrs. Francis A. O'Hearn rendered "Pie Jesu." A large delegation from North Adams council, Knights of Columbus, was present, and as the body entered the church the members, lined up on both sides of the steps, stood at attention. Knights of Columbus members acted as pall bearers and were: John Shields, James Meehan, James J. Lilly, Henry Sheehan. William Dooling and Francis A. O'Hearn. Edward Wilcox and Richard Lawless acted as flower bearers. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery."
