Bushong Pioneer Dies
Aged Man Dies Five Days after Death of Wife
Bushong, Jan. 3. W.A. Duncan, 88 years old, a pioneer of Bushong, died last Saturday, just five days after the death of his wife, who was 76 years old.
Martha McClarahan was born in Linneus, Mo., April 6, 1852. She moved to Lecompton, Kan., with her parents when she was three years old. She lived in Lecompton until her marriage to Mr. Duncan. William A. Duncan was born in Brown county, Indiana on April 12, 1840. He came to Kansas with his parents when he was a boy and settled in Big Springs, where he lived until he joined the army at the beginning of the Civil war. He enlisted as a private in Company B, 9th Regiment of Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. He served until the close of the war, receiving his discharge on June 24, 1865. At the close of the he returned to Big Springs and lived there until he was married January 10, 1868 at Lecompton, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan lived on a farm near Bushong where they lived until six years ago when they retired and moved to Bushong. They were the parents of eleven children. William Duncan died in infancy and Amy died when she as 27 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are survived by four daughters, Mrs. Mary Jackson, Mrs. Maggie Pykiet, and Miss Mattie Duncan, all of Bushong, and Mrs. Ella Drain, of Scott City; five sons, John Duncan and Ben Duncan, of Bushong; Arch Duncan, of Scott City; George Duncan, of Formoso, and Laran Duncan, of Emporia. They are also survived by 28 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral for William Duncan
Funeral services for William Duncan, 89, were held Tuesday afternoon at the church in Bushong. Rev. Layman Patton conducted the services. Six grandsons were pallbearers. Mrs. Duncan died Christmas day and Mr. Duncan died a few days later. Both were pioneer settlers and had lived near Bushong for 50 years.
