Mr. Jacob W. Hughes, Jr., 62, affectionately known to his family and friends as "Jake", departed this life on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Wake Forest Baptist Health surrounded by his loving family. Deacon Hughes was a product of the WSFC Schools graduating from Anderson High School. He received two Associate Degrees from FTCC. He received an honorable discharge from the US Marine Corp for 10 years of service. Deacon Hughes was a retired employee of Johnson Control with 36 years of dedicated service. He is a life-long member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Deacon Hughes was preceded in death by his daughter, Monique LaShawn Hughes; his father, Jacob Hughes, Sr.; two sisters, Roella Hughes and Evang. Myrtie H. Mitchell; father-in-law, Napoleon Crowell, Sr.; and mother-in-law, Mary Alice Crowell.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife, Veronica Crowell Hughes; one daughter, Twanda H. (Eric) Montgomery; two sons, Jacob W. (Fiera) Hughes, III, and Ricardo A. Hughes; eight grandchildren; his mother, Sallie Belle Hughes all of the city; two sisters, Sharon H. Dublin of Raleigh, NC, and Dorothy H. (Reginald) Alston of Roanoke, Va.; five brothers, Benjamin R. Hughes and Gordon J. Hughes of the city, Donald R. Hughes and Gregory J. Hughes of Raleigh, NC, and Rev. Dr. Paxton G.(Tangela) Hughes of Charlotte, NC; one aunt, Inez Hairston of the city; two sisters-in-law, Barbara C. Brinkley and Anita (Glascoe) Rice; five brothers-in-law, Bishop Napoleon (Patricia) Crowell, Jr., James Crowell, Wayne (Tonette) Crowell, Christopher (Monica) Crowell all of the city, and Ricky (Shenika) Crowell of Newport News, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, August 14, 2015 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Dennis H. Leach, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12noon until 1:00pm on Friday at the Church.
