Karen Jean Mullins (Nordyke) was born March 1, 1948 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Don and Winifred Nordyke. Karen was the third of six children. Karen contracted meningitis at the age of 3, which caused her to lose her hearing. The family moved to Denver, from Nebraska, so she could attend school. She attended the Evans School for the Deaf in Denver, then Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs where she graduated in 1968. She married Jim Mullins in 1968 and the marriage ended in divorce.

Karen worked at Goodwill Industries in factory assembly for many years. She retired at the age of 65 in 2014. Karen attended church at Master's Hands Bible Church for Deaf. She went to Idrahaje Church Camp and Bill Rice Church camp for the deaf.

Karen is survived by son, Timothy Mullins, six grandchildren, siblings: Barbara (Bruce) Jenson, Susan (Steve) Nordyke-Smith, Randy (Kim) Nordyke, Alan Nordyke, Paul (Claudia) Norbyke, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends in the deaf community.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Tammy Dahl.
