Popular Almonte Woman Dies As Result of Two-car Crash
The Town of Almonte was saddened last Thursday when it became known that Mrs Mavis Eleanor Dunfield had passed away in the Ottawa Civic Hospital from severe injuries she received when involved in a two-car head-on collision on Highway 17, two miles east of the Carp cut-off on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Dunfield, two of her children and her mother, Mrs Gordon Fraser were on their way to Ottawa to visit with Mr Fraser, who was a patient in the hospital undergoing tests when the accident occurred. The crash happened during a swirling snow storm, and O.P.P. officers said the highway was snow-covered and visibility poor at the time of the mishap. The two children, Christopher and Heather, and Mrs Fraser were also removed to the Ottawa Civic. Christopher was released after examination the same day and Heather was able to return home Monday of this week. Mrs Fraser is still confined to hospital, suffering from head and facial and severe fractures of her hip and leg. Mavis, who was in her 36th year, was born in Almonte on April 8, 1934, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Gordon Fraser (Edna Turner). She received her education in Almonte Public and High Schools. For the past eight years se had been employed as a secretary in the office of the Town Clerk, R.J. France, and was well and favourable known to her fellow townspeople. Prior to her position at the town hall, she had been on the staff of the Royal Bank at Almonte and Arnprior, and had also worked on occasion with the Income Tax Department at Ottawa. Mavis was a member of the Almonte United Church and a few years ago had been a faithful teacher in the Sunday School. On October 17, 1953, she was united in marriage at Richmond, Ont, to Mr Allan Earl Dunfield, who survives, together with her parents, and four children, Wanda, 14, Ronald, 13, Chris 8, and Heather, 5. Also surviving are two brothers Barry, of Gananoque, and Maurice of Welland. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin street, Almonte, on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Interment was made at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev W.L. Henley of Carleton Place, formerly of Pakenham, conducted the services. Pallbearers at the funeral were Robert J. France, J.P. McGregor, Maurice Ayotte, Ron Bradley, Paul France and Robert Lebel.
