Sam Charles Smith, age 91 of Winchester, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Elk River Health and Rehabilitation Nursing Facility in Fayetteville. A native of Franklin County, he was born on May 20, 1929 to the late Sam and Thelma Smith of Pelham. Before retiring, he was the owner and operator of Cowan Upholstery for over forty years. Charles enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Volunteers. He was an avid baseball player in youth and played for Mountain Valley League. He had the opportunity and was prepared to go to the Major League but made the decision to stay home. Charles enjoyed gardening and spending time with his love of seventy-two years. Family was important to him and he loved spending time with them all. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Troy Alan Brown; and sister, Theona Smith Clark. Charles is survived by his loving wife of seventy-two years, Nelena Gunn Smith of Winchester; daughter, Dana Smith Brown (the late Troy Brown) of Winchester; son, Don Ray Smith (Rhonda) of Vero Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Amanda Brown Haney (Kojack) of Winchester, Stephanie Brown Clark (Michael) of Winchester, and Shelley Brown Halloway (Scott) of Hillsboro; great-grandchildren, Karleigh Wells, Kyleigh Wells, Kameron Wells, Bella Mikua, Braedon Mikua, Derrick Cash, Koda Nakai, Isla Jean, Kodie Haney, Michael Haney, and Mookie (Heather) Haney; and great-great-grandchildren, Addison Marie Haney, and Emerson Layne Gordon. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday in the Moore-Cortner Chapel with Rev. Matt Hastings officiating. Interment will follow at Warren Cemetery in Pelham with Tom Gunn, Jimmy Gunn, Michael Clark, Keith Gunn, Kojack Haney, and Scott Halloway serving as pallbearers and Kameron “Bubba” Wells, Braedon “BB” Mikua, and Derrick Cash serving as honorary pallbearers.
