In the 1900 Federal census, Harry B Hoyt, his mother Nancy Hoyt; and sister Clara Hoyt were living in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.
On November 26, 1902, Harry B Hoyt and Betsey Gates Dawes were united in marriage; with John Boyd, minister of the Episcopal Church, officiating, in Washington County, Ohio. Betsey Dawes was the daughter of Rufus R and Mary Gates Dawes. Her father was a general in the Civil War.
By 1910, Harry and Betsey Hoyt had moved to Jacksonville, Florida. The Federal census for that year listed three daughters: Mary D Hoyt age 5; Nancy E Hoyt age 4; and Betsy S Hoyt, age 11 months (census taken on April 25, 1910). In the transcription, the last name was misspelt as Resyt. Harry Hoyt was employed as the general manager of a gas company.
By the 1920 Federal census, their family had grown to include a son: Mary Hoyt age 15; Nancy Hoyt age 13; Betsey Hoyt age 10; and Henry Hoyt age 5. His occupation was the vice president of a gas company.
The family was living at 2508 Riverside Ave, Jacksonville, according to the 1930 Federal census. Harry Hoyt was involved in real estate. All of their children were residing with them.
By the 1940 Federal census, Harry and Betsey Hoyt were living in Wesconnett, Florida, with their two daughters Mary Hoyt age 35; and Betsey S Hoyt aged 30.
OBITUARY: Harry Hoyt, Pioneer of City, Passes
Harry B. Hoyt, one of Jacksonville’s pioneer residents and for many years a leader in business, civic and social circles, died at his home in Jacksonville, last night after an illness of about two weeks.
He was a realtor and land developer until his retirement several years ago and held offices in many organizations, including the presidency of the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He was a member of the Morocco Shrine Temple at one time.
Survivors include his his wife, Mrs. Betsy Dawes Hoyt; three daughters, Miss Mary Dawes Hoyt and Miss Betsy Hoyt of Jacksonville, and Mrs. Thomas F [Nancy] Chidwell (or Caldwell) of Coral Gables; and one son Henry Dawes Hoyt of Coral Gables. Funeral arrangements would be announced by the Seashole Funeral Parlors.
