Joe Harden grew up in Hocking County and in Nelsonville, Ohio. He was a coal miner until moving to Michigan in about 1908 when he went to work for the railroad. He was a car repairman for the Ann Arbor, MK&T, and Wabash Railroads. He worked for the latter railroad in Luther (St. Louis) from 1922 until his retirement in 1937. He lived with his son, Will Harden, near Durand, Michigan when he died at Will's home in 1941. He was buried next to his wife in Crown Hill Cemetery.
