He is the son of John Griggs and Mary Patton, who had migrated from England to Roxbury, MA.

George Griggs was one of the group of thirteen who actually explored and founded the town of Woodstock, CT in 1686. His name, along with his cousin, Benjamin Griggs, is on the sign (pictured) that is across from Roseland Cottage in Woodstock, CT.

Also pictured is the original document, written in 1686, listing the names when the group arrived in the area to found the town, originally called New Roxbury.

George Griggs also became the town's First Selectman during the first town meeting held there. He latter returned to Roxbury, MA which is where he died and is buried. His grave location is D349.
