Delos was the younger son of John Isaac and Sarah Elizabeth (Spencer) Story. He was born near the community of Ceres, in Athensville Township.

He married Nettie Ash in 1903, and they had two daughters, Lolita Mardel, who married Floyd Martin, and Opal Lee, wife of Ralph Daniel "Pete" Rees. There were two grandchildren: Sarah Martin Neely and William John Rees.

Delos served in Manila during the Spanish-American War. He was a schoolteacher, and later a mail carrier in Illinois, but moved west because of his severe allergies. His family did not accompany him as he made his way further west in search of better health. During those years he owned a restaurant and was working as a cook at Yosemite National Park when he died.
