Daughter of Leonard West and Harriet "Jane" (Payne) Halcomb. On January 27, 1897, Bertie married James Smith in Harrisonville, Missouri. They made their home on a farm near there and the following year moved to the Doniphan, Nebraska community where they lived from then on. They had six children: sons James R. Smith and Troy E. Smith and daughters, Mrs. Roy Boroff and three children who died in infancy. Mrs. Smith had brothers Ed Halcomb of Fremont, Byron Halcomb of Missouri, Asa Halcomb of Kansas and Ben Halcomb of California. Her brothers Louis and Albertus preceded her in death. She had one sister, Mrs. Mary A. Stahl of Kansas City, Missouri.
