On May 19th, 2020, William David Hensley (age 78) went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ after a long battle with cancer. Also known for many years as Bill David, Daddy, Bubba, Mr. Bill and Big Pops, he said the first thing he was going to do after seeing Jesus was hug his beloved Martha who preceded him in death 4 years ago.

Bill was born in Richmond, Ky on November 27th, 1941 to his parents Carmon Hensley and Alberta (Creech) Hensley. They were doting parents as he was their only child. Bill David as he was known in his youth graduated from Madison High School and spent many hours on the road working for his dad at Madison Wholesale Grocery. He attended United Electronic Institute in Louisville, Ky and was hired along with most of his class to work at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company which took him to St. Louis Missouri in 1963. Bill met and married his sweetheart Martha (Cantrell) Hensley in 1965. They began raising their family in St. Louis until his company moved them to Allen, Texas in 1987 where he and Martha continued to live until Jesus took them to their new home. While living in other states the majority of his life, he never considered himself anything other than a good ol’ Kentucky boy.

Bill is survived by his daughters Karen (Patrick) Kitzman and Kelly (BJ) Willis and his 5 grandchildren, Zachary and Lyndsay Willis first made him Grandpa and then he welcomed with big Grandpa Hugs, Nicholas, Zoey and Brandon Kitzman. He loved his grandkids well and shared so many of his passions with them. His love of all things flying and music has especially touched them. Bill also leaves behind his dear Sister and Brother in law, Nancy and John Gray and their children Stephen, Ruth Anna and their families. Although Bill was an only child, he embraced his many cousins as his brothers and sisters and cherished them and kept close to them over many years. He never knew a stranger and also called so many in St. Louis and Allen his family. If you’ve never been hugged by or called over with a big smile and a “where have you been?” by Mr. Bill, you have missed out.

Bill loved working for and retiring from McDonnell Douglas after 33 years. He never stopped sharing about all the projects he worked on over the years. He was so proud to work on the Mercury and Gemini space programs as well as flight line work and then Missle systems in his last years there. He loved being involved in serving at his churches as well and said he was especially proud of his time in the FBC TV Ministry when it was just emerging and the Bus Ministry at First Baptist Ferguson, Mo. He then became the people mover driver for his Sunday school classes and other groups at First Baptist Allen, Tx and stayed involved in various activities up until the very last Friday before he died. He loved all of his friends at church like family and they have walked by his side for many years. He was known for his love of Southern Gospel music and would join in a song anywhere anytime with his strong bass voice. God’s gift to him was a love of people and he was not a big fan of COVID restrictions because it kept him from his people. He gathered often with his “old men’s club” and never knew a big country meal he didn’t like. He made his presence known by a big smile and jolly spirit. It is no doubt that he will even be missed by many waitresses, bank staff, and grocery store checkout staff.

Due to the COVID restrictions, Visitation will not be public. Please contact Karen or Kelly with questions. Bill will have a private service on May 26th at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church, Allen, TX. Services will be live-streamed so all can join in his Celebration of Life.
