Civil War Union Army Officer. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, but did not graduate. He was commissioned a Captain of Volunteers during the Civil War, and served as Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Brigadier General George McCall. During the June 30, 1862 Battle of Glendale, he was ordered by General McCall to ride to the left of the Union battle line to change the direction of fire from two federal artillery batteries. He came too close to the Confederate lines while trying to carry out his mission and was mortally wounded by soldiers from the 47th Virginia Infantry.

After the war his widow, Mary Deborah Baird Biddle, endowed Biddle University in Charlotte, North Carolina in his name. It was later changed to its present name of Johnson C. Smith University.

His younger brother was Colonel Alexander Biddle of the 121st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
