Mabel Anderson, 99, of Collins, died of congestive heart failure Monday at Story County Hospital in Nevada. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Collins with the Rev. Diane Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.
Mabel Anderson was born in a log cabin near Mansfield, Mo., the daughter of Thomas Jasper and Sarah Jane (Fagan) Dugger. She received her formal education in a rural school on her grandfather Fagan's land. On Nov. 11, 1917, she married Frederick William Anderson in Hartville, Mo. They began farming near Mansfield. They moved to Iowa in 1928 and farmed in the Maxwell area. In 1937, they moved to a farm near Collins; they moved to Collins in 1986. Mrs. Anderson spent the past year in the extended care unit at Story County Hospital. She was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church and was active in the UMW, the Collins Garden Club, the Happy Birthday Friends and the SENA Club. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, crocheting and poetry.
Survivors include two sons, Joe Anderson of Colo and Max Anderson of Collins; two daughters, Wanda Oswalt and Marjorie Sargent of Collins; 16 grandchildren; and many great-and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and three brothers.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Collins; the family will receive friends from 7 to 8, and a prayer service will be held at 7:30.
A memorial fund has been established for the Collins Trailside Park.
