James Chastain Mays, age 78, died May 1, 2020 at St. Vincent’s East Hospital in Trussville, AL. His legacy involves a deep devotion to God, a continuing love and gratitude for his family, many friends and a reputation for honesty and integrity. James was born on October 10, 1941, to John Morgan Mays and Edna Chastain Mays. He grew up in Marion and Winston counties graduating from Haleyville High School. He continued his education at the University of Alabama in Birmingham Al and at Alabama Christian College in Montgomery AL where he met Virginia Murphree. They were married on July 4, 1962 in a ceremony performed by Harold Walton who became his lifelong friend and mentor. James followed his goal of becoming a Church of Christ minister and served churches in Alabama for more than fifty years. After working with the Logan Martin Church of Christ for twenty-one years as minister and elder, he retired in 2006. He was very attached to the congregation there and continued his membership until he died. After retirement he continued to speak at various churches and sometimes served as consultant when needed. He always saw his work as a servant of God through helping people. During this time, he also worked part time as a security guard for St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital and Northside Medical Center in Pell City, Al. He developed a caring relationship with the staff, and the family remembers and appreciates all they did for him. James leaves a loving family including his wife of fifty eight years, Virginia Murphree Mays; children, James Morgan Mays (Wanda), Donna Kay Mays Taggart (Andy) and David Brian Mays (Karen). In addition ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and beloved sister, Reba Mays Clark. Graveside service led by Bro. Tim Hayes was held at Pleasantfield, AL on May 5, 2020. Kilgroe Funeral Home – Pell City directed the service
