Sarah Jo Lackey, 79, passed away on October 7, 2020 in Frisco, Texas. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on May 11, 1941.

Sarah Jo was the only daughter of Joe and Sadie Dunsworth. She grew up in Longview, Texas and graduated from Longview High school in 1958. In Longview she made lifelong friends she loved to travel and visit with for the rest of her life. She went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962 with a degree in elementary education, and eventually settled in Nacogdoches, Texas with her young family.

She loved to cook for her family and was famous with her grandchildren for her chocolate chip cookies. They would head immediately to her big freezer for a cookie or two (or five) within minutes of arriving at Grandma’s house! Beyond cookies, Sarah Jo was a talented cook. Steve once complimented her delicious pie crust, and she took the time to not just show him how to make it, but insisted they make a pie crust together. Steve will never forget the humor and love shown by Sarah Jo during that lesson, and now he’s the one getting compliments on his pie crust. Sarah Jo loved her sons- and daughter-in-law. Julie remembers shopping with Sarah Jo like girlfriends, and how much she loved their regular Saturday morning phone calls where she sometimes talked to Sarah Jo more than Derek did. John loved Sarah Jo’s sense of humor. He remembers ribbing her about how old everything in her house was, and she shot back that things only broke when our family was visiting. This fun give and take continued for decades.

She was an avid gardener and worked hard on keeping her yard beautiful. When Leah, Derek, and Megan were adults, each visit back home would include a walk with Mama around her whole property. She would proudly point out what she had planted, how the garden was doing, and the conversation would take its own course from there. Talking to our mom about life, enjoying each other’s company, and lazily strolling around the playground of our youth are memories we will always cherish.

This playground--her yard, the creek, and the surrounding woods--also became the playground for her grandkids. What stands out most to Mason, Joey, and Lucas when visiting Grandma was getting sandy building dams in the creek and exploring among the pine trees. Blake and Brent remember finding recipes and cooking with Grandma, and the joy of getting snow cones with her. During their summer visits to Grandma’s, she would always make sure her grandkids had plenty to do to have fun like putt putt golf, vacation Bible school, and going to the rec center. These seemingly simple activities are part of their childhood they’ll always remember.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches for over 50 years and was a member of the Upper Room/Open Door Sunday school class where she took attendance every Sunday for many years. She also loved her church Circle VI ladies and spent many hours laughing and learning with them over the years. She worked for a time in the Kitchen Guild and loved serving her church in that way.

After teaching for 20 years, Sarah Jo retired from Nacogdoches ISD in 2003. Most of that time was spent at Nettie Marshall Elementary school. Every spring, before school was out for summer, she would walk her second grade class down the road to her home so that they could play in the creek and have a picnic in her beautiful backyard. She loved retirement because that meant more time to read, garden, and more trips to Dallas to visit family and go shopping. In her later years, she loved visiting and laughing with her friends on Queens Row. “The queens” all looked after each other and were like family.

Sarah Jo was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Sadie Dunsworth and her former husband and lifelong friend, Dr. Jerry N. Lackey. She is survived by her children Leah and husband Steve Kahn of Nacogdoches, Derek and wife Julie of Coppell, Texas, and Megan and husband John Bourgeois of Plano, Texas. She was so proud of her grandchildren Mason Bourgeois of Austin, Joey Bourgeois of Brooklyn, New York, Lucas Kahn of Nacogdoches, Blake Lackey and wife Andi of Houston, and Brent Lackey of Denton, and she would have been delighted by her two great grandchildren, Ezra and Baby Girl Lackey.
