British Statesman. Born Montagu Samuel to a silversmith in Liverpool. Reversed his name, and sought his fortune in London. Became a leading banker specialising in foreign exchange. Liberal MP 1885-1900. Many charitable works, including support to charities for Jewish and non-Jewish poor in the East End of London, and support for Jews fleeing oppression in Russia. Founded the Federation of Synagogues. Peerage 1907.
