John Carl Ferguson, Jr. was born in Howell County, Missouri. After he graduated from Willow Springs High School, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He was honorably discharged on June 7, 1944. His class ranking was 43 out of 914 midshipmen--Class of 1945--graduating in 3 years rather than 4. He served as battalion adjutant in the 4th battalion. John was not commissioned due to an alleged health concern that turned out to be falsely diagnosed.
John married the love of his life, Cecilia Rhea Anne Rush, in June of 1944 at the naval academy. Together they raised four children: Carol, Mary, John, and David. They moved to Orinda, California in 1959, and then to their almond tree ranch in Hughson, California in 1983.
