Ruby Sharp, of Osage, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, with her family by her side. She was born Ruby Marlene Somdahl on April 14, 1939, in Detroit Lakes, MN, and spent her childhood growing up with her four brothers and sisters on their parents’ farm north of Richwood, MN. She began her school career at the one-room schoolhouse in Richwood and went on to graduate from Detroit Lakes High School in 1957.
Ruby married Boyd Sharp on September 13, 1958, in Detroit Lakes and they immediately started a family that would eventually include seven children. They lived in the Detroit Lakes area until the fall of 1964 when they moved to Royal, Iowa. They made their home in Iowa for twelve years, and Ruby somehow found time between parenting duties for stints running a restaurant, working in a veneer plant, wrapping Christmas presents at JC Penney, and canning the vegetables she grew in her large garden.
Ruby and the family moved back to Minnesota in 1977, stopping in Park Rapids for a couple of years before settling on Straight Lake north of Osage in 1980. She held various jobs in the area before working as a Paraprofessional in the Park Rapids school system from 1994 – 2010. Ruby was also active in her church and in her community, pitching in at innumerable church events and serving as a poll worker for many elections.
Above all, Ruby was a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother who taught generations of her family how to love one another and to be decent, caring, kind human beings. She was a neighbor and a coworker and a friend to many. She was well-loved, she never said a bad word about anyone, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Ruby was proceeded in death by her parents, Roy and Alice Somdahl, her brother, Roy Somdahl, and her sister, Margaret Curtis.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Boyd Sharp, and by her seven children: David (Dotty) Sharp, Bloomington, IN; Barbara (Joseph) Guidarelli, Elk River, MN; Monica (Randall) Hanson, Frazee, MN; Robert Sharp, Park Rapids, MN; Michael (Margaret) Sharp, Park Rapids, MN; Angela (David) French, Nevis, MN; and Ryan (Kelsey), Osage, MN.
Her grandchildren: Justin (Lyndsi), Asher (Jennie), Sam (Anne Marie), Maria, Nick, Joe (Liz), Beau, Nathan, Hilary, Rachel, MacKenzie (Sean), Adam Jay, Victor, Will, James, Claire, Reed, Cooper, Colter, and Tanner.
Her 11 Great-grandchildren.
Her sister, Barbara (Myles) Flint, Reston, VA, and her brother, Theodore (Ramona) Somdahl, Richwood, MN.
