TREASURY CLERK DROWNS WHILE BATHING IN RIVER
Sinks Without Cry or Struggle, in View of Three Companions.
While three companions looked on, Elwood McCarthy, 23 years old, a clerk in the Treasury Department, living at 3027 Eleventh street northwest, drowned off Rock Point, Md., about 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
The drowned youth together with George and Craig Helms, of the Clifton Terrace apartments, motored to Rock Point early yesterday morning to spend the day fishing and bathing.
The Helms brothers and McCarthy had been inseparable companions since they met in Paris several years ago.
Made No Outcry.
The drowning occurred in twenty feet of water about a mile from shore. McCarthy, who was far from a good swimmer, had been swimming a few strokes away from the boat and then returning.
The fifth time he left the boat he went down and, according to George Helms, never came up. Young McCarthy made no outcry, nor did he appear to be struggling as he went down, according to Helms.
The Helms brothers and another companion named Murphy, after waiting a moment for McCarthy to reappear, began diving near the spot where he was last seen. They continued to dive until they were exhausted.
Youths Recover Body.
Later the youths rigged a grappling hook and after dragging the river finally located the body and brought it to the surface.
The body was placed in a church at Rock Point and late yesterday the drowned youth’s brother, Harry, and an uncle, William G. Lipscomb, started for the fishing resort to bring it to this city.
Young McCarthy was one of a large number of Washingtonians who went to France more than two years ago with the Graves Registration Service. Before he went overseas he had been attending George Washington University here.
He is survived by his father, Daniel R. McCarthy, his mother, a brother, Harry, and a 10-year-old sister, Thelma, all of whom live at 3027 Eleventh street northwest.
