Morning Tribune newspaper of San Luis Obispo, and San Barbara ran the same article, Nov 26 1890
Senora Francisca Castro de Moreno, sister of Gen. Don Jose Castro, Gen. Fremont's foe during the latter's in vasion of Monterey, died at the residence of her daughter Senora Dolores do Cautua, near Salinas on Thursday the 13lh inst. The remains were brought to Monterey and buried in the Catholic cemetery here, Friday, the 14th inst., and were followed to the grave by a large concourse of friends and many relatives. Deceased was born in 1809 and was therefore 81 years of age at the time of her death , she was quite active physically and retained full control of her mental faculties to the very last. Senora Moreno was a devout Christian, a most estimable lady, a loving mother and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She was of the first families of California and leaves an army of offspring. Besides several children now living, she leaves sixty-four grand children and fifty-four great-grand children. She was the daughter of Don Jose Tiburcio Castro, Perfecto of Alta California under the Mexican government, and Senora Refugio Alvarez de Castro, sister of General and Governor Don Jose Castro. Among the deceased's daughters now living are: Dolores, wife of Lieutenant Juan Ignacio Cantua, who bore the Mexican standard and fell wounded in the battle of El Gabilan mountains with Gen. Fremont; Josefs Moreno, wife of ex-Senator Don Pablo de la Guerra, who at the time of his death was Judge of the district; Ramona Moreno, wife of Jose Ortega, officer of honor in the Mexican army; Refugio Moreno, wife of Guillermo Hartnell, ex-Clerk of the District Court; Luisa Moreno, wife of our ex-Sheriff and well-known citizen Thomas Watson ; Luis and Francisco Moreno, her only sons. Among the dead children are: Maria Ignacia de Soberanes and Adelaide, wife of Thomas Bouton, ex-county clerk of San Luis Obispo county. Deceased was rich in landed possessions and prior to the American invasion owned many leagues of land in the Salinas valley and in other portions of the State.
