V. Gwytha (Cook) Telotta, succumbed to leukemia and passed away peacefully on 3 Dec 2014 at the age of 77, surrounded by family. She was a resident of New Orleans for over 64 years, the place she called "home," and where she lived, worked and raised a family of 8 children.

Gwytha was born 28 May 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, to Ora Belle Hasty Cook and Verney Clifton Cook. After her mother died, she lived there with her father and step-mother, Doris Cook, until the age of 13 when her family moved to Algiers. She graduated in 1955 from Martin Behrman High School, married Charles I. Kenney, Jr., and began her most significant life role as mother to her children.

Gwytha was a long-term parishioner of Holy Name of Mary Church before joining the community of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where she married her husband of 25 years, Robert J. Telotta. Gwytha and Bobby have been active participants of Holy Spirit for the past 25 years, where Gwytha sang beautifully in the choir and volunteered her time working in the office. On 1 May 2005, the Archdiocese of New Orleans conferred upon Gwytha the Order of St. Louis in recognition of her leadership and dedicated service to the Church. Music was a strong current running throughout Gwytha's life, from the protestant hymns she learned as a child from her father, to her love of Broadway musicals, Christmas carols and popular vocalists and groups that she passed on to her children (and grandchildren), to the contribution of her singing skills to the church choir.

In addition to her lovely voice, Gwytha was known for her wonderful sense of humor. Family and friends would elicit Gwytha's distinctive laugh just so they could revel in it with her. Gwytha had a sharp mind and superior intellect, which led to the longevity and success of her profession as a legal secretary. She retired from Jones Walker after 15 years of employment in their Admiralty & Maritime group. Gwytha was a warm, caring and giving person who maintained close personal relationships with many friends who loved her dearly. It seemed that everyone who met Gwytha liked her instantly. She was intellectually curious and remarkably open-minded, making her an exceptional conversationalist. Gwytha will be missed by many.

Gwytha was preceded in death by her daughter, Gerri L. Kenney, her son, Charles I. Kenney III, and her sister, Jeanne Hancock. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Robert J. Telotta, her children, Gwynne Shehane (Larry), Gretchen Kenney (Dan Rubin), Clifton Kenney, Ginette Kenney, Glynell Kenney (Ronn Todd), and Gaylinne Kenney; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; brothers- and sisters-in-law and cousins with their respective children, all of whom she loved and cherished. In lieu of flowers, Gwytha requested that donations be made to a charity of your choice.

A celebration of Gwytha's life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, 20 Dec 2014, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 6201 Stratford Place, Algiers.
