John Verbrycke Mumford, Sr., beloved husband for 60 years of Roseann (Alfaro) Mumford, of Riverdale Road, Westerly, passed away at his home on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at the age of 84.
Born in Berlin, Md., he was the son of the late Emery and Beulah Mumford.
John retired as a Captain from the US Marine Corps and later became an insurance salesman for many years until his retirement. John was a member and former Commander of the Amancio-Falcone-Gaccione VFW Post #8955. He had also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and was a former District Executive of R.I. and Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to his wife, John leaves four sons, John V. Mumford, Jr., Michael Mumford and Thomas Mumford, all of Westerly and David Mumford of Okinawa, Japan. He is also survived by his sister, Emily Ward of Philadelphia, Pa. and five grandchildren, Noreen, Matthew, Stephen, Amanda and Miyabi.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly on Friday at 10 a.m. followed by Burial with Full Military Honors at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.
