Willard L. Anderson, 90, of Rock Island, died Friday, October 31, 2008, at the Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island. A private family gathering will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to Augustana College, Rock Island. Wheelan Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.

Willard Lawrence Anderson was born on October 5, 1918, in Moline, a son of Martin J. and Edith E. Johnston Anderson. He married Doris G. Quist on December 31, 1941, in Rock Island.

Willard attended public schools in Moline and graduated from Moline High School in 1936. He graduated from Augustana College with an A.B. Degree in 1940. While at Augustana, he was named to the College Conference of Illinois all-conference basketball teams in his junior and senior years and was team captain in his senior year. Willard was later named to the Augustana Hall of Honor, along with 49 other varsity athletes who participated during the first half of the past century.

He served for five years in the U.S. Army during the World War II. Volunteering, he began his enlistment as a private and rose to the rank of captain. In France and Germany, he commanded a field artillery battery of 110 men and officers through seven months of combat. Willard earned four battle stars for his participation in four major European campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Army reserves through the Korean War era but was not called to active duty.

Willard worked as a reporter for the Moline Daily Dispatch during his first year in the Army at Camp Forrest, Tennessee; at that time he was with the Moline unit of the Illinois National Guard, which had been inducted into federal service. He worked in Public Relations and was Alumni Director at Augustana College from 1948-1955; he was Advertising Manager, Pioneer-Central Division of Bendix Aviation Corp., 1955-1956; and joined Wagners Printers, Davenport, in 1956, where he served in the sales department as advertising and sales promotion manager until his retirement in 1982. Willard owned and managed an automatic typewriting business for over 25 years. Most of his business life was somehow graphic arts related. His publications and advertising won international, national, and regional honors.

Willard has served as president of the Lutheran College Public Relations Association, president of the Iowa Industrial Editors Association, board member of the Moline Kiwanis Club and Rock Island and Quad City Chapters of the -American Red Cross, the Rock Island area Heart Association and Augustana Historical Society. He also served as president of the Rock Island Chapter of American Field Service, was a volunteer worker on numerous fundraising campaigns in behalf of Augustana College, the American Cancer Society, Franciscan Hospital and the Rock Island YMCA. He was a member of the Rock Island Chamber of Commerce, Charter Member of the Public Relations Association of the Quad Cities.

Willard was a blood donor most of his adult life. In the late '40s and early '50s, he was a pioneer in the efforts in the Quad City area to reduce and eliminate widespread racial barriers in housing and employment.

Survivors include his wife, Doris "Quisty"; son, Gary Ross Anderson, Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Norman Quist Anderson and Dianna Downing, Columbus, Ohio; granddaughters, Signe Downing Anderson and Erinn Christine Anderson, both of Columbus; a sister, Lois Roby, Spokane, Wash.; two nieces; and three nephews.
