James Edward Magers, 81, of Smiths Grove died Sept. 17, 2007, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow.

The Barren County native was the owner and operator of Magers Shell Station for 40 years, a member of Oak Forest Missionary Baptist Church, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 517 F&AM and a World War II Army Veteran. He was a son of the late Carl Magers and Verda Bishop Magers. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, Wallace, Scott and Harry Magers; and a son-in-law, James G. Goodman.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lewis Magers; five children, Doug Magers and his wife, Joanne, and Scott Magers and his wife, Shawn, all of Bowling Green, Kathy Goodman McChesney and her husband, Richard, of Smiths Grove, Susan Magers Erskine and her husband, Jim, of Canmer, and Lori Magers Coffman and her husband, Brad, of Bowling Green; 11 grandchildren, Amanda Jo Gregory, Kevin Magers, Stacy Goodman, Amy Arnett and her husband, Shawn, John Magers, Renee Magers and Katie Coffman, all of Bowling Green, Thomas Goodman of Smiths Grove, Randall Erskine of Horse Cave and Russell Erskine and Jessica Erskine, both of Canmer; three step-grandchildren, Laura Griggs and her husband, Scott, and Jennifer Pardon and her husband, Darryl, all of Louisville, and Jason McChesney of Smiths Grove; four great-grandchildren, Brentley Gregory, Alison Magers, Shawn Thomas Arnett and Will Arnett, all of Bowling Green; three step-great-grandchildren, Jackson Griggs and Wesley Griggs of Louisville and Wesley McChesney of Smiths Grove; a sister, Norma Magers of Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters-in-law, Patsy Allen of Smiths Grove and Doris Hunt and her husband, Joe, and Becky Mobley and her husband, John, all of Bowling Green; a niece, Judy Keith of Bowling Green; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Hays Cemetery.
