John Vernon Underwood passed away in the early morning hours of October 5, 2020 in Tallahassee, Florida after a valiant battle with small cell lung cancer.
John was born November 11, 1949 in Leland, MS to the late Vernon Miller Underwood and Julia Fay Fisher Underwood. He served in the United States Army Special Forces and did two tours in Vietnam. He was a gifted marksman and gunsmith. He owned a gun shop for many years and was a certified NRA instructor. He enjoyed fishing and taught fishing courses at Florida State University. Another hobby, deep water diving, inspired him to open a salvage diving shop.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Vernon Clyde (Dora "Vashti" Underwood) Muse Sr. and Mrs. John Thomas (Fredna Sue "Corky" Underwood) Greenlee Sr.
He is survived by wife of 32 years, Joyce Parker Underwood of Tallahassee, daughter, Mrs. Steven Joseph (Lora Elizabeth Underwood) Tatum Sr., grandsons, Steven Joseph II "Stevie", Steven "Luke", & Steven "Jacob" Underwood Tatum, granddaughter, Vashti Marie Tatum, all of Pearl, MS, and one sister, Mrs. Jimmy Floyd (Jean Miller Underwood) Ramsey Sr. of Iuka, MS. He is survived by many other friends and family.
Military Honors Services were at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2020 at Tallahassee National Cemetery, followed by internment. Pastor Rodney West officiated. Culleys MeadowWood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
