Richard Eugene Bacon, 73, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born to Robert Lloyd and Viola (Rader) Oakley Ruby on February 5, 1947 in Auburn, Nebraska. He received his early education in Brock until moving to Auburn in 1962 and graduated from Auburn High School in 1965. Rich worked for Armstrong’s Dairy Queen in Auburn part- time through school. He attended Peru State College where he received a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in Art and Industrial Arts in 1973. His first teaching position was at Humboldt Public Schools where Richard taught art and shop at Humboldt for 37 years. Rich received his master’s degree in Art Education at Northwest Missouri State in 1986 and retired from Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer Schools in 2010. He was united in marriage to Mary Sherman of Peru, on Nov. 4. 1966 at the Auburn Christian Church in Auburn, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Auburn and Humboldt. Rich was a member of the Auburn Christian Church.

Rich loved working with young people and coaching softball and baseball for many years. He also enjoyed keeping stats at games, watching sports, collecting baseball cards, painting and drawing. For many years, Rich drew the beautiful scenes portrayed on the backdrop for the Richardson County Fair. He built their home in Auburn and later remodeled their home in Humboldt. Rich also worked for the Auburn Newspapers for 29 years, did sign painting throughout his teaching career and other various jobs. He was honored to the Richardson County Fair King in 1994 and was a member of the Nebraska Softball Hall of Fame and the Quad County Museum. Rich passed away on Friday, September 4, 2020, at the Stormont Vail Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas having reached the earthly age of seventy-three years, six months and thirty days. He is preceded in death by his father and mother.

Rich is survived by his loving wife Mary Bacon of Humboldt, sons: Jeffrey Bacon of Pawnee City, Matthew Bacon of San Padro, CA; step-grandchildren: Angel Oakley of Manhattan, KS; Carly Salak of West Point, NE; Matt Steinblock of Bennet, NE; brothers: Robert Bacon of Nebraska City, Charles Bacon and wife Shelly of Lincoln and Ronald Bacon of Lincoln, sisters: Rogene McMullen and husband Richard of Genesco, IL; Rosamary Moore of Springfield, MO; Linda Wallen and husband Craig of McCook, NE; step-mother Kinuko Jean Bacon of McCook, NE; 7 step great-grandchildren, special friends Dan, Vicki, Jakob and Joshua Manning, and other nieces, nephews, relatives and many former students and softball players from days gone by.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at The Hall Funeral Chapel, 707 15th Street in Auburn, Nebraska with Pastor Tom Osborn officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2020, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt, Nebraska. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.

Inurnment will be at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Peru, Nebraska.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family with a later designation.
