Born Jan. 26, 1915, in Danville, Ill., to Fred and Olive (Gravat) Swisher, he was raised in Illinois and came to California, settling in Davis in 1959. He worked for many years as a truck driver delivering freight all over the United States. He once said that he had delivered freight in every state except Connecticut.
During his career he also worked as a bus driver for Greyhound Bus Lines.
His family said he loved trains and would sit at the train station in Davis to watch the trains arrive. He once wrote a letter to Amtrak asking if he could ride in a locomotive. Some time later, Amtrak made his dream come true and let him ride in the locomotive with the engineers from Davis to Reno and back.
He was described as a family-oriented man and was very proud that before his death there were five generations of the Swisher family alive.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June Swisher, in April 1977; a son, Robert E. Swisher, in 1988; a brother, Stanley M. Swisher; and sisters, Arlena Rae and Mildred Moore.
He is survived by his children, Jon K. Swisher of Lake Tahoe; Billy Lee Swisher of Danville, Ill.; Patricia Ann Walton of Danville, Ill; stepson, James Freed of Shipshewana, Ind.; and stepdaughter, Elsie Jean Minier of Goshen, Ind.
He is further survived by his brother, Don D. Swisher of Davis; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
