Susan (Sue) Cobb Bullock Huggins, 89, died Friday October 2, 2020 at her home after a lengthy battle with failing eyesight and other health problems.
Born near Bullock on September 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John (Jack) Watkins Bullock and Susan (Susie) Pittard Bullock. She was the wife of the late Herbert (Herb) Everett Huggins.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sally Ann Bullock Bullock.
A graduate of Peace College, Sue held B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For a number of years she taught high school English in the North Carolina public schools, and she worked for a publishing company in Richmond and for one in Raleigh. In her later years she was a part time English instructor at Vance-Granville Community College, and she served as a librarian and relief postmaster at Stovall. From 1986 to 1990 she wrote the column “Bittersweet” for the Oxford Public Ledger.
Sue was a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church. Prior to its closing in 2000, she was one of the final five members of Grassy Creek Presbyterian Church at Stovall, where she served as an elder.
She was a member of the Saturday Book Club and a former member of the Sir Walter Raleigh Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century and of the Sassafras Sassies Red Hat Society of Stovall.
A private family graveside service will be held Sunday, October 4, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the Stovall Memorial Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Alan Koeneke. Sue was grateful to the members and friends of Oxford Presbyterian Church for their care and concern over the years, to those who drove for her when she could no longer drive for herself, including the late Wesley Jones, Angie Miles, David Bova, Vickie Henderson, and Bessie Royster, who also provided care and companionship; to Jayne Coats for the use of the reading enlargement device that had belonged to her father; to Mark Pace of the Granville County Library System; and to the State Library for the Blind for providing books on tape.
The family also expresses appreciation to Toney Rest Home, the 3rd Medical Nursing Team at Granville Medical Center and Kindred Hospice.
