Margie Lee Palmer Brown was born to Lola and Leon Palmer on December 13, 1927 and died at 11:55 A.M. September 29, 2020.

Born and raised in the sandhills area of North Carolina, Margie and her 3 sisters (Jean, Betty Lou and Joyce) grew up during the Great Depression and the World War II era. Despite the rigors of this time period, Margie never complained about any hardships she had experienced. Instead, she and her sisters (known as the Palmer gals by friends and family) had countless good stories to relate about their youth.

Throughout her life, Margie remained a homebody. Although she had visited Asia and Europe on numerous occasions, her idea of a good time involved reading the newspaper or a book while drinking a cup of strong black coffee and watching birds out her back window. She also thrived on “yardwork” and sometimes worked in her yard from dawn to dusk. No leaf was safe when Margie had a rake!

Margie married Clifton Brown soon after he returned from service in WWII. He enlisted with the U.S. Air Force shortly after it was created in the mid 40’s. The next 17 years involved time spent at air bases in Florida, Mississippi, and Germany before coming to Texas. Once in Texas, Margie and the family lived near air bases in Houston and Abilene before coming to Bergstrom Air Force Base in 1961. The family loved Austin and decided to call Austin home after Clifton retired in 1963.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband Clifton.

She is survived by her daughter Judy Kay Brown Moore and husband James; her son Mark Brown and wife Janice. She has four grandchildren, Suzanne Marie Moore Salmon, Clifton Moore, Kellee Kay Brown Popovich, and Mason Mark Brown. She inquired regularly about her great-grandson Ezra Popovich. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Palmer Proffer.

With her years of friendships, marriage, and family, Margie had a fulfilling life. Those who knew her will cherish the memories. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the USO, the Red Cross or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. (EST) at Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Southern Pines with burial to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM at the funeral home before the service. The service will be live streamed on the Boles Funeral Home Facebook page.
