Mary Julia Noia lived an interesting and vibrant life in her short 64 years. She was born on the beautiful island of San Miguel in Ponta Delgada in the Azores. On 16 Jun 1878 she married Joseph Nunes DeFraga at Sao Pedro Catholic Church in Ponta Delgada. She arrived with her four small children on the ship Benquella in New York on 16 Jun 1890 with final destination Boston. Her occupation has been listed as a dressmaker. Her husband, Joseph Nunes DeFraga, likely died prior to her immigration to the U.S. Family lore states he was a mariner who went down with his ship. Mary Julia remarried on 3 Sep 1896 to John Francis Winters and they had one child in 1898, Helena Mae.
Sometime after 1916, Mary Julia was a widow again and moved to Chehalis, WA and later joined several children in the Oakland, CA area. She met with an untimely death via a street accident in Oakland on 30 Aug 1926. Mary Julia was hit by a street car and then thrown into the path of an oncoming car.
