daughter of Burly Randolph Page & Juanita (Campbell) Page
wife of Leroy Vickers MD
-------------
Sandra Jean Page was born in Durham, North Carolina on February 14th, 1945. She was the oldest child of the late Burly Randolph Page and Juanita Page. She spent her early years in that city and attended and graduated from Hillside High School, where she was an honor student and was elected to the National Honor Society and the Quill & Scroll Journalistic Honor Society. Sandra was also President of the Debate team. She then attended North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central University, NCCU). There, she and four other classmates started the colleges’ literary magazine, the Ex Umbra, with her being the fiction editor. After graduating from NCC, Sandra studied at Bryn Mawr College (1 year), Harvard University (Summer Session), Case Western Reserve University (Graduate School) and the University of Cincinnati (Graduate School).

While pursuing graduate studies in the Philadelphia area, Sandra met Leroy Vickers, a student attending Haverford College during a Summer Session. They stayed in contact with each other and eventually began dating. On July 2, 1977, they were married, and out of that union, their daughter Lee Melanie was born.

Sandra’s work history included being an award-winning staff writer at Cincinnati Bell Magazine. After her stint there, she became a schoolteacher in the Charter School System in Cincinnati (The Marva Collins School). Sandra’s pedagogical style was to engage and prepare her students for informed debate on historical, political, and social issues. She believed very strongly that the youth must be prepared for the challenges of each generation through critical, informed thought and education.

Sandra was a long-time member of Zion Baptist Church and attended services as her health permitted. More than anything, Sandra’s kindness and compassion for others was evident throughout her life. As a child, she comforted a friend who would wait endlessly for a parent who did not come for his expected visit. She was fiercely protective of her siblings, whom she loved dearly. Sandra would selflessly donate money, time, and personal possessions to others, and to causes about which she felt strongly (particularly the Humane Society). Sandra often helped her students who had financial hardships in various ways, and made sure the neighborhood cats stayed fed.

Sandra transitioned from this life September 23, 2020. She is survived by the love of her life, Leroy Vickers, M.D.; her daughter Lee Melanie Vickers; her mother, Juanita Page (Durham, NC); her sister, Daphne Diane Page-Aaron (Durham, NC); her brothers, Burly Randolph, Jr and Carlos Jan Page, M.D. (Durham, NC and Baltimore, MD, respectively); In addition, her brother-in-law(s), Dr. John Vickers (Mary), Lovell Vickers, Reverend Talmadge Vickers (Odessa), Frank Vickers (Doris), Larry Vickers (Venetia) and Sister-In-law(s) Dr. Leila L. Vickers, Johnnie Ruth Ransaw, Laura Vickers, and a host of nieces and nephews; and Tawny, the family cat.
