He enlisted in the US Army on March 9, 1959. His basic training was at Ford Hood, Texas with advance training at Fort Chaffee, AR. After that he entered Fort Campbell, KY for Airborne training and became a paratrooper. He was assigned to B Troop, 17th Calvary, was in the Honor Guard, and was honorably discharged.
Back home he married the love of his life, Betty Trieglaff, on September 2, 1963. They lived on his home farm where he milked cows until 1996.
He loved to talk about his airborne service and deer hunting stories. Neighbors often came to his home for coffee and treats. More stories continued.
Garry had a rough voice and scared many people until they got to know him. He had many nicknames; both to his face and behind his back. He had a special place in his heart for all his family and friends.
