Published: April 29, 2011 New York Times

PATTERSON--Bevin Daly, 84 years old, died on April 25, 2011 after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Bevin was the beloved wife of 54 years of Robert P. Patterson Jr. She was the dearly loved mother of six children: Anne Patterson Finn, Robert P. III, Margaret, Paul, Katherine, and Bevin C. Patterson who died as a child in 1961. Bevin grew up in Fairfield Connecticut, the fourth child of eight born to Madeleine and Paul Daly: Madeleine D. Potter, Paul, Michael, Daniel, T.F. Gilroy, Dermot Daly and Alison Gerard, who survives her. Since the age of four, when she taught herself to read, she was an avid reader and excelled at school, skipping several grade levels. She graduated from Barnard College; and, before marrying, worked as a secretary and as a model. Though very beautiful, her most striking qualities were her kindness and compassion. In addition to being a devoted mother and wife, Bevin volunteered to teach children reading in Harlem and religious education in the Bronx. She also did volunteer work for the Women's Division of the Legal Aid Society and the Central Park Conservancy. She served as secretary of the Board of the Cosmopolitan Club in New York City. Much of her spare time, she spent gardening at her home in Cold Spring on Hudson, N.Y., where she was involved in a variety of organizations such as the Putnam County Garden Club and Historical Society. After her children were raised, she worked as a real estate agent at the Douglas Elliman firm. Bevin's amazing grace, beauty, and kindness endured through her long struggle. She will be remembered for her compassion, thoughtfulness, and insight. She faced her difficult last years courageously, without a complaint, and always unselfishly. All who knew her felt blessed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tennessee 38105 ([email protected]). A wake will be held on Friday, April 29, from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Avenue, N.Y.C. A service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 11:00am at Our Lady of Loretto, Fair Street, Cold Spring on Hudson, New York, 10516
